REAL ID in New Jersey
Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. A REAL ID-compliant license or acceptable alternative is required for domestic air travel and federal facility access.
New Jersey licenses are not automatically REAL ID-compliant. You must request a REAL ID when visiting the DMV.

New Jersey uses electronic Social Security number verification.
New Jersey-Specific Information
New Jersey uses the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), not a DMV. The MVC uses a unique 6-point identity verification system where each document is assigned a point value, and applicants must present documents totaling at least 6 points. This system predates REAL ID but satisfies its requirements. Appointments are strongly encouraged at MVC agencies.
