REAL ID in Michigan

Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. A REAL ID-compliant license or acceptable alternative is required for domestic air travel and federal facility access.

Michigan licenses are not automatically REAL ID-compliant. You must request a REAL ID when visiting the DMV.

Address Change on License

Michigan uses electronic Social Security number verification.

Michigan-Specific Information

Michigan licenses are issued by the Secretary of State (SOS) rather than a DMV. Michigan also offers an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) for crossing the Canadian border, which is a separate product from the REAL ID. SOS offices operate on an appointment-only basis for most transactions.
