Black ice earns its name from what you do not see. It is a thin, transparent glaze that forms on pavement, and because it lacks the white texture of packed snow, drivers read the surface underneath as ordinary wet asphalt. The danger is not that black ice is more slippery than other ice. It is that drivers approach it at speeds they would never choose if they knew it was there.

Where and When It Forms

Black ice concentrates in predictable locations, which is what makes it manageable. Bridges and overpasses freeze first, because cold air circulates both above and below the deck while ordinary roadway retains ground heat. Shaded stretches beneath trees or between buildings stay frozen long after exposed pavement has thawed. Low points collect runoff that refreezes overnight.

The riskiest temperature range sits near freezing rather than well below it. Melting during the day followed by refreezing after dark produces the classic overnight glaze. Early morning and late evening are the highest-exposure windows.

Reading the Road

Watch the surface ahead for a wet sheen on a day when nothing else appears to be melting. Genuinely wet roads throw visible spray from the tires ahead of you. If the pavement looks wet but you see no spray and hear no road noise from tires, treat that as a warning.

A sudden drop in tire noise is one of the more reliable cues. Ice quiets a vehicle noticeably.

If You Start to Slide

Do not brake hard, and do not make an abrupt steering correction. Both transfer weight in ways that worsen a skid on a surface offering almost no grip.

Ease off the accelerator and let the vehicle slow on its own. Look toward where you want the car to go rather than at what you are trying to avoid, since drivers steer toward their focal point. Steer smoothly in that direction. If the rear of the vehicle steps out, steer gently into the direction of the slide until it settles.

Patches are usually short. Holding your inputs steady until you regain traction is generally more effective than trying to fight the vehicle across a few car lengths of ice.

Winter conditions and the equipment required to drive in them differ substantially between states. Check the rules that apply where you drive, and consider a defensive driving course if you regularly drive through freezing conditions.
