Skill does not expire, though it does decay without use. Paperwork is another matter entirely, and learners who take a long break frequently return to discover that something has lapsed while they were away.
Your Permit Is the Most Common Casualty
Learner permits are issued for a fixed term. When one expires you generally have to reapply, and depending on the state that can mean retaking the knowledge test, paying the fee again, and in some cases restarting a holding period.
Renewal is often possible before expiry and considerably cheaper than starting over. The number of times a permit can be renewed is sometimes capped.
Driver Education Certificates
Whether these expire varies. Some are valid indefinitely once issued. Others lapse after a defined period, which particularly affects students who complete a course well before they are eligible for a permit.
Ask the provider directly, and keep an independent copy of the certificate. Providers close, portals go offline, and reconstructing proof years later is unpleasant.
Logged Practice Hours
Supervised hours generally do not expire on their own, but they are usually tied to the permit that authorized them. If the permit lapses and a new one is issued, some states treat the log as continuous and others require hours to be accumulated under the current permit.
Keep the log regardless of format. A completed sheet is difficult to reconstruct.
Test Results
Passing the knowledge test typically grants a window in which to take the road test. Let the window close and the knowledge test may have to be retaken even though nothing about your understanding changed.
A failed road test usually triggers a mandatory waiting period before you can retest.
Prepaid Lessons
Not a legal question but a commercial one. Many schools attach expiry dates to lesson packages, and some are strict about them. Ask before buying, particularly if your schedule is unpredictable.
Skills Fade Even When Documents Do Not
A learner who stops for a year loses real capability, and returning drivers consistently overestimate what they have retained. A refresher lesson or two is usually enough to recover it.
